Peru Fairtrade community project is now completed!

Every year, since 2006, Insomnia has taken part in the Fairtrade Fortnight, where a percentage from each hot beverage sold during those 2 weeks is donated to our nominated community project.

In 2017, we’ve raised €14,305 for the construction of a Youth Centre for young members and the children of the ACPC Pichanaki Coffee Cooperative in Peru. We are thrilled to say that this community project is now 100% finished!

The young members of the Fairtrade certified coffee cooperatives in the Junin region can now use the Youth Centre facilities to hold social and cultural activities, including:

  • Training of young coffee growers in the Junin regions, with a view to include youth in the coffee business;
  • Develop events and courses in technical training and business management for young members of the coffee organisations;
  • Develop cultural events for youth.

We’ve received a number of photos of the finalized project, which we are pleases to be able to show you, after all, this project would not be possible without your support!

Thus far, we have raised over €92,179 for these nominated projects. In 2018 we’ll be working on a project that helps to empower women within the coffee industry in Latin America.

Golden Turmeric Latte

Turmeric, also known as Golden Spice, is a relative of ginger and a superfood when it comes to health, turmeric contains the powerful antioxidant curcumin which has anti-inflammatory properties. There are a range of health benefits that can be derived from  turmeric, it helps to boost your immune system, which is so important in these winter months, it helps to lower cholesterol, and it’s a digestive aid which helps to boost your metabolism. Ask a barista for this drink with soya milk or coconut milk at no extra charge for a vegan/dairy-free option.

Almond Matcha Latte

This rejuvenating, nutritious drink is made with a blend of matcha powder for a clean energy boost that will keep you going throughout the day. Like the turmeric latte it is an immune-boosting, cholesterol-lowering, detoxifying drink. Ask a barista for this drink with soya milk or coconut milk at no extra charge for a vegan/dairy-free option.

Chunmee Green Tea with Lemon

Our new range also sees the return of the Organic Chumnee Green Tea with lemon,  which also brings with it many health benefits, including healthier skin, weight loss, and it’s crammed full of antioxidants.

New Year, New Treats

Insomnia also launched a new range of baked goods this month, including the Raw Hazelnut Bar, Chocolate Dipped Coconut Macaroons, Overnight Orange and Cranberry Oat Cakes and a Porridge and Sultana Loaf.

The Raw Hazelnut Bar is a popular energy bar choice for those on the go. The flavours of the raw hazelnuts, dates, and a sprinkling of cocoa powder blend together to make a delicious snack for your next coffee break. Many of our customers will be glad to hear that our Raw Hazelnut Bar is vegan-friendly!

The Overnight Orange and Cranberry Oat Cake is the healthiest treat in our new bakery collection. With only 152 calories per cake it’s the perfect healthy snack to fill you up in the morning. The oats will keep you full during the day, while the orange and cranberries will  help satisfy those sweet cravings.

The Chocolate Dipped Coconut Macaroons have a soft, sweet texture on the inside, are lightly toasted on the outside and dipped in chocolate to top it off! Your mouth will be bursting with delicious coconutty flavours when you try one of these amazing macaroons.

04 Jan2018 Kick Start Your New Year Health Buzz with Insomnia’s Turmeric Latte

Kick Start Your New Year Health Buzz with Insomnia’s Turmeric Latte

Move over Matcha Latte, the Turmeric Latte is the latest drink to take the health world by storm. Insomnia are adding the Turmeric Latte to their Irish and U.K. menus from the 4th January 2018, when we launch our New Year product range.

If you’re looking for a healthy drink to get you going in the mornings, or a little boost after all of the festive celebrations, this is the perfect caffeine-free hot drink to help Insomnia customers recharge and get their body back in check as the new year begins.

We have used a blend consisting of turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, and coconut blossom sugar, which when combined with steamed milk, creates a delicious turmeric latte, also known as golden milk. Turmeric, the main ingredient in the blend, is a relative of ginger and is widely recognised by those in the health industry as a superfood. Turmeric contains the powerful antioxidant curcumin which has anti-inflammatory properties.

Some other amazing health benefits of Turmeric include:

  • Supporting the hepatic metabolism (which helps your body to process alcohol)
  • Helping to soothe the body of inflammations
  • Containing enzymes and antioxidants which help to support liver function
  • Helping to support the circulation of blood in the body
  • Easing joint discomfort
  • Helping to curb indigestion and heartburn

As for the taste of this delicious drink - the flavours of the turmeric, ginger and cinnamon conjure an aromatic, earthy taste which is smoothened out by the milk in the steaming process, followed by a slightly sweet note from the coconut sugar. You’ll definitely be back wanting more!

Insomnia are catering for the growing vegan marketplace, and customers with dairy allergies, by offering non-dairy alternatives at no extra charge, made with either soya milk or coconut milk, instead of cow’s milk.

Also on the menu are the Almond Matcha Latte and a herbal Chunmee Green Tea with lemon. These flu-fighting, nourishing drinks will be on the Insomnia menu from the 4th January 2018 along with the Turmeric Latte.

Get ready to see these golden lattes and healthy green drinks popping up on your Instagram account over the next few months!

Saying the magic words: Insomnia opened in Primark Watford!

Watford is home for the well-known Watford Football Club and for its proximity with Warner Bros. Studios where Harry Potter movies were set.

Primark Watford is part of the primary shopping area in town where more than 140 brands can be found.

2017 has been an amazing year for Insomnia’s expansion in the UK and Primark Watford opened just in time for Christmas shopping – customers can now relax after a busy shopping day and get their daily coffee fix.

Our partnership with Primark started just a few years ago, in 2015, with our first opening in Swords, Ireland. We have now ten stores in partnership with Primark, our four Irish stores: Penneys Athlone, Penneys Swords, Penneys Waterford and Penneys Liffey Valley, and our UK stores in Primark Bromley, Primark Reading, Primark Oxford Street and Primark Stockport, Primark Trinity Leeds and Primark Watford.

Our Store manager Maria was thrilled to be serving the first coffee this morning and welcome in Primark customers!

Speaking about the partnership Harry O’Kelly, CEO of Insomnia Coffee, said: “Great coffee and great fashion under one roof is a winning formula for Primark customers. At Insomnia we are all very excited to open our new concession and bring our coffee to customers in Primark Watford.”

ADAM MOLONEY - THE VOICE OF SHANNON KEEPS IT LOCAL!

Three weeks ago, Shannon Gospel Choir gave an amazing performance at Insomnia Shannon! We had an amazing audience and all seats were taken to see this much-loved choir. A generous amount was raised (€370) for the Goradiche Orphanage (St. Senan’s Parish, Shannon) during the evening.

Our customers enjoyed this special evening so much that we’ve decided to do it again and bring another local artist…

Adam Moloney is only 14-years old and he is from Shannon, as a contestant at The Voice Kids UK he has blown away the jury with his talent and he is on his way up to success without forgetting his roots (Shannon, Shannon, Shannon!!).

Following Adam’s contribution to Pieta House with is song “Wish Upon a Star”, all donations on the night will aid to Pieta House.

Peru Fairtrade Community Project Progress Report

Insomnia have been involved in Fairtrade Fortnight for the past 8 years, with numerous community projects along the way. We have contributed a total of €92,179 for our various Fairtrade Community Projects during this time.

This year, during Fairtrade Fortnight, we raised €14,305, which will go directly to the ACPC Pichanaki Coffee Cooperative (CAC PICHANAKI ACPC), in Peru, our latest Fairtrade Community Project.

This project will contribute to the construction of a Youth Centre for young members and the children of members and workers involved in production of Fairtrade certified coffee in Peru. ACPC Pichanaki Agrarian Coffee Cooperative is an organisation of 302 coffee producers and as part of its effort the cooperative believes that is essential to involve its young members and the children of its members, encouraging their commitment to the organisation. This new Youth Centre will be very important for the community allowing the following activities:

  • Facilitate the training of young coffee growers in the Junin region, with a view to including youth in the coffee business
  • Develop events, courses in technical training and business management for young members of the coffee organisations
  • Develop cultural events for youth.

We are 6 months into this project, and we are incredibly pleased to report that construction of the build is over 60% complete.

We have received a number of photos of the progress, which we are pleased to be able to show you, after all, without the support of our customers, this project would not be possible.

Beat the Drums – We are open in Drumcondra

We’ve just opened our brand-new store in Drumcondra!

Insomnia is the newest addition to this lovely residential area on the North Side of Dublin. Surrounded by interesting sites to visit, the store location (2 Drumcondra Road Upper) is on walking distance to the Botanic Gardens, Croke Park and Griffith Park.

Drumcondra Resident Rami who was the Manager at Insomnia Montrose, is now leading the team here and couldn’t be happier, she’s passionate about social media and her creativity skills are always put to good use on her latte art!

“We’re all thrilled to be part of the local community in Drumcondra! Customers were delighted to visit us this morning for a fresh cup of coffee.”, says Rami.

Tamara and Rose have also been working with us for a while too and are very enthusiastic about this new challenge.

When it comes to the layout and design of the store, it was built around natural materials and earthy tones and includes some of the newest Insomnia’s contemporary design features such as the vintage tea cup clock with cups bought from second hand shops in the liberties.

23 May2017 St. Stephens Green reopened with a new look

St. Stephens Green reopened with a new look

Summer has arrived and brought us not only the new delicious summer drinks but also a completely refurbished store – St. Stephens Green!

St Stephens Green reopened last week after a huge makeover, the store has now a new comfy sitting area, perfect for a quick meeting or catch up with friends.

The new store design incorporates natural wood, granite and brick finishes with a retro vintage feel through quirky fun branding and wall features.

The main feature in the St Stephens Green is defined by the decadent ceiling, which is cladded in decorative tin tiles of various metallic finishes. We choose the ceiling as a focal point in order to build on, and enhance, the Georgian style of the building.

The interior design scheme uses a combination of vintage and industrial elements to create an eclectic but contemporary overall look.

“It’s hard to believe this is the same store that I started in 21 years ago. What used to be a dull and plain store has been transformed into an enchanting showpiece through the use of a colourful and authentic theme.

As we continue to expand into different markets, we realized pretty quickly that having a one-size-fits-all design really isn’t very effective," Insomnia CEO Harry O ‘Kelly said. "We want to be where the customer is, and we want to reflect the community we’re going into."

After 14 years, St. Stephens Green Insomnia store is now up for a fresh start and ready to welcome you back!

03 Apr2017 HAVE YOUR CAKE AND EAT IT WITH BRODERICK’S BC BARS

HAVE YOUR CAKE AND EAT IT WITH BRODERICK’S BC BARS

Two outstanding Irish success stories today announced they have joined forces. Dublin based family of bakers Broderick’s Brothers have joined forces with three time Olympian Derval O’ Rourke to let us have our cake and eat it.

Baking brothers Barry and Bernard known for their sumptuous handmade cake slices are normally associated with indulgent treats but 16 months ago they started developing their new healthy range to meet a growing demand for indulgence with benefits.

The range includes 3 different flavours, Apple & Cinnamon, Cocoa & Hazelnut and a Peanut bar with several more in the pipeline including the co-creation of an energy ball with Derval in the coming months.

I am really delighted to be working with Barry and Bernard on this range. They really understand the need for high quality healthy treats that really pack a punch when it comes to benefits. I am passionate about imparting the knowledge I have gained around nutrition and performance and the guys have taken it all on board and have included some really strong nutritional credentials in this range. I am looking forward to working with the team on our energy ball which we hope to launch later this year” commented Derval

Broderick’s Brothers health bars, available in Insomnia cafes, selected Spar stores, have all natural ingredients, are high in protein and fibre, gluten and wheat free, with no added sugar and are low in calories. The ideal pre-workout snack or guilt free treat!

As with their existing range, which is on sale in over 30 countries worldwide, the products taste exceptionally good and only the best ingredients could be used. The new range includes ingredients such as dried red apple, juicy sultanas and a hint of earthy cinnamon in the Apple and Cinnamon version. The Cocoa and Hazelnut version has high quality cocoa and roasted hazelnuts with 9g of protein.

Broderick’s Peanut Bar packs a satisfying punch using roasted peanuts. These delicious bars are a great option for post workout with plenty of natural protein from pea crispies, Chia seeds, Edamame beans, nuts & pumpkin seeds.

To get the range right they worked with some of the best food technologists, sensory analysts, nutritional experts and handpicked the best ingredients from around the globe to strike the right balance in the product range. Offering exceptionally good taste with a much healthier offering, two things that don't always go hand in hand.

We are really pleased with how our new range BC has turned out. We have maintained the unrivalled quaility of our products and married it with a guilt free treat. We have not rushed this process as it was so important to make sure the products were perfect. The Irish consumer is becoming increasingly health concious and these products will allow them to maintain that ethos while enjoying a guilt free treat full of high quality ingredients” Bernard Broderick.

Be sure to give these a go today in you're nearest Insomnia store.

21 Mar2017 Daffodil Day – Supporting Irish Cancer Society

Daffodil Day – Supporting Irish Cancer Society

Daffodil Day takes place every year on the 24th of March, and the Irish Cancer Society is urging the public to support this great cause.

At Insomnia, we are determined to show our support by selling daffodils in our stores, and help to turn Ireland yellow this Friday, 24th of March. Each year, Daffodil day helps raise millions of Euro to support the Society’s free, nationwide services for those with, and affected by cancer in Ireland.

Bobby Kerr, Insomnia Chairman, who is now one year cancer-free, is this years’ Daffodil ambassador and he is calling on businesses across Ireland to get involved in this year’s fundraiser, which also marks the 30th year of Daffodil Day, an amazing accomplishment, and one Insomnia are proud to be a part of.

16 Mar2017 Thank you to all our customers!

Thank you to all our customers!

Thank you to all our customers for their great support this Fairtrade Fortnight!

For the past eight years of Insomnia’s involvement in Fairtrade Fortnight we’ve contributed with five cents from each cup sold towards this great cause. We have contributed a total of €92,179 for our various Fairtrade Community Projects.
The €14,305 raised this year will go directly to the ACPC Pichanaki Coffee Cooperative (CAC PICHANAKI ACPC), in Peru, our latest Fairtrade Community Project.

This year’s project will contribute to the construction of a Youth Centre for young members and the children of members and workers involved in production of Fairtrade certified coffee in Peru.

- Facilitate the training of young coffee growers in the Junin region, with a view to including youth in the coffee business;
- Develop events, courses in technical training and business management for young members of the coffee organisations;
- Develop cultural events for youth.

Choose Fairtrade and change the world on your coffee break!

27 Feb2017 Insomnia Fairtrade Project - Youth Centre in Peru

Insomnia Fairtrade Project - Youth Centre in Peru

Insomnia Fairtrade Community Projects

Every year, since 2009, we have taken part in Fairtrade Fortnight, where a percentage from each hot beverage sold is donated to our nominated Insomnia Community projects. Thus far, we have raised over €77,000 for these nominated community projects.

Our last project, which started back in February 2014, raising over €37,182, saw the construction of a student Infirmary and Dispensary for the Hekima Girls School in Bukoba, Tanzania, where malaria is a big issue. The objective for this project was to take care of student’s health, ease the school nurses burden of commuting to and from hospitals, while also greatly reduce involving healthy students in nursing the sick and therefore ultimately promote students’ academic performance. Construction of the infirmary was completed late 2016.

Looking Ahead

With the completion of the Infirmary in Hekima girls school, Insomnia have moved quick to select our latest Fairtrade Community Project. The funds raised through Fairtrade Fortnight 2017 will go directly to the ACPC Pichanaki Coffee Cooperative (CAC PICHANAKI ACPC), in Peru.

The project aims to raise funds towards the construction of a Youth Centre for young members and the children of members and workers involved in production of Fairtrade certified coffee in Peru.

  • Have a local centre which will facilitate the training of young coffee growers in the Junin region, with a view to including youth in the coffee business”
  • Develop events, courses in technical training and business management for young members of the coffee organisations, including women.”
  • Develop cultural events for youth

ACPC Pichanaki Agrarian Coffee Cooperative

ACPC Pichanaki Agrarian Coffee Cooperative is an organisation of 302 coffee producers (64 women and 238 men). Founded 15 years ago, it became Fairtrade certified in 2009 and now sells its coffee to Canada, the US and throughout Europe, continually improving its quality and sustainability. As part of its effort to ensure its future, the cooperative believes that it is essential to involve its young members and the children of its members, encouraging their commitment to the organisation. To this end, it is keen to build a training centre to improve and professionalise the training of its members in tasks such as pruning, seed management, pest and disease assessment, waste water management, quality control, coffee roasting, barista training and business management.

The immediate beneficiaries will be 100 young coffee farmers and children of members and workers in ACPC Pichanaki coffee cooperative and 10 other small coffee cooperatives in the Junin region.

14 Feb2017 Infirmary project in Tanzania is now successfully operating!

Infirmary project in Tanzania is now successfully operating!

Every year, since 2009, we have taken part in Fairtrade Fortnight, where a percentage from each hot beverage sold is donated to our nominated Insomnia Community projects, to date we have raised over €77,874.

For the past three years, the funds raised during Fairtrade Fortnight have gone directly to the construction of a student Infirmary and Dispensary for the Hekima Girls School in Bukoba, Tanzania, our nominated Fairtrade project.

The Hekima Girls School is located in the rural village Kashozi, close to Bukoba town. The school was primarily set-up to rescue young women by providing them with quality education especially those from poor economic backgrounds who would otherwise be faced with hostile cultural, economic, academic and social injustices.

One of the most pressing challenges is looking after students’ health, on average 20 students are treated for Malaria each week, needing bed rest. The new infirmary houses 10 students, 1 nurses bedroom, kitchen, pharmacy, laboratory and examination room. As well as combating Malaria and other diseases, it provides the school nurse ample time and space to take care of sick students, so healthy students can concentrate on their studies, therefore ultimately promote students academic performance.

The funds raised during Fairtrade Fortnight 2016 were used to successfully complete the final stages of the project.

Last month Sr. Esther, Headmistress, gave us an update on the project and wrote us:
We continue to thank Insomnia Coffee Company and all friends from Fairtrade Ireland. We are proceeding well with the Infirmary project at Hekima Girls’ Secondary School.

The funds raised through Fairtrade Fortnight 2017 will go directly to our new Insomnia Fairtrade project of the ACPC Pichanaki Coffee Cooperative, Peru.

08 Feb2017 Home to Brew for me

Home to Brew for me

We opened in Market Cross Shopping Centre Kilkenny today.
This is the first Insomnia Coffee Shop to open in Kilkenny, and a very special one for me, since it’s my home city.

My dad, Bobby Kerr Senior, owned and ran the Newpark Hotel for over 40 years. The Hotel was in the family for 48 years.

The store itself provides a spacious and cosy seating area, offering customers a chance to unwind after a long day’s shopping in the centre. It has a contemporary feel, ample seating options and decor to match to enhance customers shopping experience. The store will also provide employment for six new members of staff.

It has taken us 20 years but finally, we look forward to welcoming customers to our store and are confident they will enjoy this new addition to the shopping centre.

16 Dec2016 Manley Creating the Perfect Blend between Fashion & Coffee #LoveBeingfestive

Manley Creating the Perfect Blend between Fashion & Coffee #LoveBeingfestive

It’s starting to look a lot like Christmas at Insomnia Coffee Company.

Coffee lovers can get their festive fix at Insomnia with their new Christmas range now in store. This year Insomnia has partnered with fashion and accessories label Manley to design their new Christmas Cups.

The cups come in three designs and with a central theme, the iconic “White Christmas” and the “snow flake”. Manley has taken what is at the epicentre of its brand, intricate hand crafted leather embellishment and created a contemporary and powerful motif that conjures up the spirit of Christmas. The snow flake is central to the cups, the first cup has an illustration of a snowman with the Manley design featuring in its hat bauble and buttons, the second has a Reindeer with its nose in the Manley snowflake design and the third has a full cup with all the studded leather snowflakes creating a real Christmassy feel and Manley’s trademark textured detailing embellishment and popping tones. The festive colour palette is a blend of Manley’s signature vivacious metallic in old silver and pewter with Insomnia’s buoyant red and yellow.

“I wanted to design a beautiful Christmas cup range that conveys the happiness and spirit of the Christmas season in a way that resonates with Insomnia customers” said Emma Manley. “It was great to work with an iconic Irish brand such as Insomnia who always have an appetite for innovation and seek out opportunities of doing things differently”

Emma Manley

This year Insomnia has partnered with fashion and accessories label Manley to design their new Christmas Cups, the fashion like was started by young Irish designer, Emma Manley.

Dublin born and based, Emma Manley, studied Fashion Design in Dublin. On graduating, Emma then moved to New York where she interned with luxury sportswear label VPL. A move to London to intern with Alexander McQueen, saw Emma hone her skills in embellishment and design, a feature you can now see in our Christmas cups. Emma then made the move to launch Manley in 2011.

Across her career, Emma has worked with and dresses numerous celebrities including Kathryn Thomas, Sharon Corr, Marina and the Diamonds, Anna Daly and Aoibhin Garrihy.

Emma uses a range of fabrics and always uses the highest quality leathers silks and wools with Jersey being another Manley staple.

14 Nov2016 Insomnia in Parnell

Insomnia in Parnell

We have just opened our doors on Parnell Street. Home to The Ambassador Theatre and The Gate Theatre, while The Garden of Remembrance, Dublin Writers museum and the Hugh Lane Gallery are all on the north side of the street.

The area is a central spot for shopping with the Ilac Shopping Centre - which is the city's oldest shopping centre and the recently built Moore Street mall.

Romena wanted to work for Insomnia because he is a big fan of the brand and the quality of the coffee. Hes delighted to be leading the new team, and their is a great group of passionate and skilled baristas on board. He has to admit that coffee isnt his favourite drink as he has a soft spot for Chai latte. Originally from Romania he is now living in Beaumont, not too far from the city. He spends a lot of his spare time in the gym and cycling - and so would one day love to become a food nutritionist.

Lucas, our first barista is originally from Poland, living in Santry. His favourite coffee is cappuccino. He personally thinks that the Insomnia Rocky Road will be a favourite among the Parnell locals. His dream is to one day become a music producer making his own music!

Mara, our second barista is originally from Brazil and is now living in Beaumont. Her favourite coffee is a decaf cappuccino with soya milk. Everyone raves about the hot chocolate, so she has no doubt that that will be the local fave! In five years time she hopes to own her own Insomnia store. Also an avid gym goer, Mara likes to travel and spend time with her friends while shes not at work.

We completely kitted out our new Parnell store with some new stylish and funky furniture to make sure your visit is as comfortable as it can be - giving you plenty of different options. If you're in the area, be sure to call in and meet Romena and the rest of the team!

01 Nov2016 Getting Reading in Insomnia Primark

Getting Reading in Insomnia Primark

Today marks the first day of winter, but more importantly we've opened our second UK Primark store in Reading. This is an exciting opening as it is a brand new Primark store as well!

The former BHS building in Broad Street now acts as Primark's flagship store. Reading is also the location of the company's UK headquarters. The 1960s building has undergone a major renovation to accomodate the large fashion retailer. The store is glass-fronted with black grantie pillars.

We now have five stores in partnership with Primark, our three Irish stores; Penneys Athlone, Penneys Swords and Penneys Waterford, and our recently new stores in Primark Bromley and Primark Reading. Harry, Insomnia CEO, "This year has been great for our expansion with our retial partners Primark, moving to the UK has opened a totally new market for us and we are looking forward to coninuing this growth of new stores with them in the future".

The store has been kitted out in our new rebranded shop model. These include our new teacup lights, our gallery wall and our scrabble wall piece. Primark fashionistas can now relax after their day shopping in the new store with a velvty flat white or a class cappuccino.

Dorota, our store manager, was eager to join the Insomnia team because it was a new brand in the UK market and she feels this creates "amazing opportunities for both personal growth and career development". As a manager, she feels the most rewarding part is being able to lead her team to deliver the best performance and service possible. Although its a quiet area, she feels that it is close to the busy side of London and also the beautiful seaside of Cornwall and Wales. Her personal favourite is an espresso on ice, but she feels that our hot chocolate is shaping up to be the nation's favourite.

Dorota and the team are looking forward to welcoming the Reading population into the store.

25 Oct2016 We’re open in Sligo!

We’re open in Sligo!

Sligo is one of Ireland’s largest towns. In fact, it is the second largest urban centre in the West, with a population over approx 20,000. Rich in history, culture and heritage, Sligo is a popular destination spot for tourists.

We are now lucky enough to have joined the coast with our first Sligo store which opened yesterday in the Quayside Shopping Centre. Alina, our store manager has been with the Insomnia team for a while, living in Dublin. She has since relocated with her family to Sligo. Alina had only visited the town twice before taking the role. She fell in love with the friendly people here, and this helped make her decision to make the move.

Our supervisor, Emma has recently just come back from travelling in the land down under. She is settlying back home in her native Sligo and has gained quite a lot of experience in the retail and coffee industry when she was in Australia. She can't wait to bring these Aussie skill set to Insomnia Sligo.

Originally from Poland, our barista Agata is the creative guru of the team. With her extensive coffee and latte art skills, watch her change your cappuccino into flowers, spirals and even animation characters. Although Agata is not a local, she has a very decent Sligo accent!

Barista Nicola, is also just back from her travels in Canada, has taken a keen interest in the coffee industry and wants to further her knowledge and progress her development in the events trade.

Our barista, Blaithin, loves to bake and is mostly looking forward to having regulars in the store and meeting the friendly faces that she knows from the area. Megan, our last barista, is the music maestro of the team, and will keep the store entertained with some of her music!

19 Oct2016 Westland Row welcomes Insomnia Coffee

Westland Row welcomes Insomnia Coffee

We're delighted to announce our latest opening with partners SPAR on Westland Row, which is a street on the south side of Dublin city, dating back from the year 1776.

Shane, our store manager expresses his love for coffee and recently completed a course with the Dublin Barista School. "I have heard nothing but great things about Insomnia so decided I wanted to be part of the Insomnia family" and so applied for a position with us. With an extensive managerial experience he knows how to motivate and keep his team interested in their jobs. His personal favourite is a caramel soya latte, but says that the americano and hot chocolate "seems to be going down a treat so far!".

Originally from the UK, Shane is now living in Lucan. He explains how working in Westland Row is the perfect spot as it is "quiet but not too far away from the hustle and bustle of the city". His ultimate career goal is to own his coffee shop one day.

Christopher, one of our baristas, from Malahide loves the Pumpkin pie, vanilla or caramel latte (but not all flavours in one!) He thinks the hot chocolate will be a high seller among the locals. He hopes to one day become an actor. Luiza, our second barista loves arabica coffee, and is looking forward to working in the area as she lives close by in Dublin.

18 Oct2016 New store in Ballybrack

New store in Ballybrack

Ballybrack is a small suburb of Dublin, located in Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown county. It's neighbouring areas include Killiney and Loughlinstown.

Our team were up bright and early today to open our doors to the Ballybrack community. And just in case people might have missed us we decided to put a giant cup outside the store.

Our manager Anita, orginally from Poland has been living in Tallaght for the last 10 years. She is looking forward to managing the new Ballybrack team as she says they have an abundance of coffee experience between them all. Her favourite drink is a white mocha but she thinks that our signature hot chocolate will be a local favourite - espically among the school children that have visited the store! Anita like to read, go to zumba class and spend time with her family when she is not working.

John, our store supervisor is from Shankhill. Like Anita, John agrees that the hot chocolate will go down a favourite in the area! His dream job is to own his own coffee & cocktail bar. And in five years time, he sees himself as a latte art champion. In his spare time he like to cook and bake, and he has a hidden talent of mixology

Our two Ballybrack baristas are Daniel and Gabi. Daniel is a Ballybrack native, living in Coolerin. He explains that the area has a close community, and this is something he loves about living there! His ultimate career goal would be to own his own coffee shop. He would hop to progress to supervisor and then onto manager. An avid car and motorbike fan, he ysed to play a lot of Irihs musical instruments including the violin, tin whistle, flute and the baron!

Gabi is living in Bray and her favourite drink is a latte! Her current career goal is to perfect her latte art skills. Like Daniel, she too, would like to progress to supervisor one day.

13 Oct2016 Bromley - our first store in UK Primark

Bromley - our first store in UK Primark

Our exciting partnership with leading fashion retailer Primark, which was announced last year, has seen us open our doors to the first UK Insomnia store, located in Bromley. Currently, we have three stores operating in Ireland - Penneys Athlone, Penneys Swords and Penneys Waterford.

We are enormously proud of this achievement, which marks a high point for all associated with Insomnia, when you look back through the history and where we started - in a Galway bookstore almost two decades ago, back in 1997. Insomnia CEO, Harry O’Kelly, “Primark is a leading international brand operating in 300+ stores over ten countries, so this is a partnership we are very excited about and are delighted to continue our expansion as a concession partner with them."

The store itself boasts a new modern design on our shop fit. There are unique elements to the store such as a gallery wall and even teacup lights! The ample seating options create a cosy and relaxed atmosphere for customers to unwind with a cup of coffee after a hard days shopping. Our team have been hard at work, ensuring that everything to the smallest detail was ready to welcome the Bromley community.

The first Insomnia coffee was served on Tuesday morning, where, Tayeb, our store manager, and our team Louise and Kim were eager to get started and familiarizing the UK with our premium Fairtrade coffee. Harry O Kelly, "Great coffee and great fashion under one roof is a winning formula for Primark customers."

13 Oct2016 We’re in SPAR Castleknock!

We’re in SPAR Castleknock!

Castleknock is a suburb of Dublin and located 8 km from the city centre. The village even has its own patron saint, St. Brigid. We were delighted to open in the SPAR store there. Lidia, our supervisor, "Castleknock is a village close to Dublin, its a really nice area! The people here are really nice and welcoming. I'm originally from Poland, but I have lived in Castleknock for many years and have fallen in love with the area."

“I'm really looking forward to leading the Castleknock team - theres some great baristas joining us! For me, a latte always wins as the best coffee option - but i do think that our americano might be a favourite among the local population."

Ian our store barista,“I like Castleknock, I’m actually not living here at the moment but I’m moving here soon after joining the team. My favourite drink is chai latte, I just love it, it has a great taste and texture and it always smells nice! I have to agree with Lidia, the local favourite will definitely be an Americano - Irish people love it!" Ian also mentioned how he hopes to become a team leader for Insomnia in the future."

30 Sep2016 Home roots opening in Monaghan

Home roots opening in Monaghan

Last week marked a special opening for me. Having been part of the Insomnia team for the past 10 years, it was great to open our first store in my hometown of Monaghan. This is also our first store in Ulster.

I grew up in Monaghan town and went to school in Beech Hill Collge - It was lovely to see students from the school queing up for hot chocolate, which brought back some fond memories of my time there.

Fellow Monaghan native and former Monaghan Harps player Diane Rudden is the Regional Manager for the store. She too was excited about the opening, and proud to introduce our coffee to her friends and family. Diane has been with Insomnia for 12 years now.

We were overwhelmed with the support of local businesses and espically the Monaghan Town Shopping Centre management. This was one of the busiest opening days we've had! It was great meeting some old friends and seeing some familar faces. I was lucky that my Mum also came down to pay a visit, who shared a coffee with her neighbour.

The store itself provides a spacious and cosy seating area, offering customers a chance to unwind after a long day’s shopping in the centre. It has a contemporary feel, ample seating options and decor to match to enhance customer's shopping experience.

20 Sep2016 London is calling!

17 Aug2016 Insomnia representing at Rose of Tralee

Insomnia representing at Rose of Tralee

I applied to be a Rose Escort after a good friend Dervla a former Mayo Rose, encouraged me to put my name forward. Although I have watched the Rose of Tralee Festival on Tv over the years it was something that I had never really considered applying for. However, having participated in a Strictly Come Dancing fundraiser for my local GAA club St. Patrick's in County Louth, it gave me the confidence to be involved in an event like the Rose of Tralee and embrace the opportunity to meet new people from across the world from every walk of life.

I was absolutely delighted upon hearing the news that I was chosen to be one of the 65 escorts for this year’s festival!

The lead into the festival has been really intense with daily updates coming from our Liaison team to ensure that all escorts are fully up to speed on their briefs for the week. Boot camp was an eye opener as to the amount of hard work and dedication that goes on behind the scenes. The purpose behind the annual boot camp is for all of the escorts and Rose of Tralee team to get to know each other and also to prepare for the festival itself. We participated in a number of tasks including a cycle over Connor Pass, a hike up Mount Brandon, turf-footing, abseiling, kayaking, surfing, ironing and sewing in order to prove that we are all worthy to fulfil the position of a Rose of Tralee escort.

We are extremely lucky to have four Escorts returning to serve alongside us this year. Each of them has filled us in on their own tips and words of wisdom from past experiences, some of which could easily have been over looked by many.

Following the boot camp back in June, myself and a number of the Dublin based escorts set up a tag rugby team together for a 10 week league in Clontarf. It was a great way to get to know some of the guys I will be alongside for the duration of the festival. It was also nice to bounce some ideas off each other and ensure that the preparations were coming along as the date approaches.

Thankfully the preparations are now complete and I am looking forward to meeting as many of the 2016 Roses as possible throughout the week. A few friends and family members are coming down to the festival, which will be kept busy with the large variety of events planned around Tralee for the week.

I’m very grateful for the kind support and sponsorship from my fellow colleagues here in Insomnia. Last Friday “casual Friday” was changed to “dress up” Friday for me where I arrived to work in my tuxedo. I even tested my latte art skills and managed (after some help from some of the latte art pros in the office!) to craft a lovely rose flower on our coffee. I’m thrilled that some of the Insomnia team will also be going down to Tralee in support of the festival! Its sure to be a great week for everyone!

The winner will be chosen at random and announced on our Facebook page on the 19th of August, so best of luck to all entrants.

Pete's Dragon

A reimagining of Disney’s cherished family film, “Pete’s Dragon” is the adventure of an orphaned boy named Pete and his best friend Elliott, who just so happens to be a dragon.

For years, old wood carver Mr. Meacham (Robert Redford) has delighted local children with his tales of the fierce dragon that resides deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest. To his daughter, Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard), who works as a forest ranger, these stories are little more than tall tales…until she meets Pete (Oakes Fegley). Pete is a mysterious 10-year-old with no family and no home who claims to live in the woods with a giant, green dragon named Elliott. And from Pete’s descriptions, Elliott seems remarkably similar to the dragon from Mr. Meacham’s stories. With the help of Natalie (Oona Laurence), an 11-year-old girl whose father Jack (Wes Bentley) owns the local lumber mill, Grace sets out to determine where Pete came from, where he belongs, and the truth about this dragon. Disney’s “Pete’s Dragon” opens in Irish cinemas on August 12, 2016.

Insomnia shortlisted for Irish Quality Cafe Food and Drinks awards!

With almost 100 entries and after 2 days of tough judging at the Dublin Institute of Technology’s School of Culinary Arts and Food Technology, the shortlisted products for the Irish Café Quality Food Awards were announced last week. We were lucky enough to be chosen as some of the shortlisted entrants in not just one, but four categories!

We now compete against a shortlist of 11 cafes and 43 food and drink products across 16 categories  to win a prestigious Irish Café Q award to be presented on 8th September at FIRE Restaurant at the Mansion House, Dublin.

Organised by Metropolis Business Media, group events manager Lara Newton comments:  “We have been blown away by the incredible standard of products available and by the warm welcome customers receive in Ireland’s cafes.  It has been a difficult job for our teams of expert judges, but we are very proud of the shortlist announced today, and delighted for our finalists.  As former winners can testify, picking up an Irish Café Quality Food Award is a powerful marketing tool, with many winners using the awards’ logo in their café, on packaging and in national press, television and advertising.”

Headline sponsor for the awards is innovative packaging company Graphic Packaging International.  The awards are also sponsored by Coeliac Society of Ireland, who played a vital role during the stringent judging process of the expanded ‘Free From’ categories, and Sacla’.

The four categories in which we have been shortlisted for are:

1) National Café Chain

2) Our Coffee in the Tea & Coffee category

3) Red Velvet Cake in the Christmas Category

4) Avocado and Mozzarella sandwich in the Grab and Go Category

All of us here in Insomnia HQ are looking forward to the award ceremony and hope to be returning with some silverware!

27 Jul2016 Some things are better in twos! Drogheda Town Centre now open

Some things are better in twos! Drogheda Town Centre now open

Today, we opened our second store in Drogheda town centre at the lobby to the Arc Cinema. We have created a new uber cool (if we do say so ourselves!) mall seating area for you to relax and enjoy your Insomnia faves!

Amy Mitchell, our store supervisor, was there today amongst the excitement of the new opening. Originally from Swords in Dublin, she now calls Drogheda home having lived here for 20 years! Her favourite drink is an iced carmel latte, and loves a good catch up with the girls over some coffee. Having worked in the Arc Cinema for a year now, she looks forward to her new adventure within the Insomnia franchise.

Our two baristas Courtney and Stephen were also there today helping prepare for the opening and will be responsible for the yummy tasting coffees and treats that awaits the Drogheda community. Drogheda native Courtney has been working full time for Insomnia for a year and a half. She says shes loves working and her faveourite drink is a cappuccino! In her spare time she enjoys going to the gym, spending time with her friends and family and loves when shes at work! If she were to be a superhero, she would be wonderwoman!

Stephen, originally from Julianstown has been working in the Arc Cinema for the last 10 months. Like Amy, his favourtie beverage is an iced caramel latte. He is currently studying retail management and marketing in Blackrock BFEI and is enjoying his summer break working for Insomnia. Following his education he would like to work in retail management.

21 Jul2016 Benefits of Mobile Payments

Benefits of Mobile Payments

As you might of heard, we just launched our mobile payment feature on our app last month. For those of you who are unsure as to what mobile payments actually is, it is paying for your Insomnia purchases using only your mobile phone, eliminating the need for cash or cards. This method of payment is becoming very popular as it is the most fast and efficient method of paying! Still not convinced and need to know what are the actual benefits of mobile pay? Well look no further, as we have compiled a list of the best perks (in our opinon anyway!) of mobile payments!

Security

Mobile payments is one of the most secure payment methods used today. It keeps all your details private, so your card details are invisible to the cashier. As well as that, the only way a hacker can break into your account is if they get your phone, your phones pin or your fingerprint as your number isnt stored anywhere. Instead the revolutionary system used a subsitute number to protect the identity of the card.

Privacy

Mobile payments transactions are not only secure but confidential. This means, that all of your transactions are between you, your bank, and the receiver.

Speed

There is no doubt that mobile payments is one of the fastest payment methods. All you have to do is scan your phone at the till and you're done!

Free pockets!

Using mobile pay means theres no need for any extra cash or even your cards! That means you've more pocket space and less things to worry about in your pocket!

Cheaper credit card swipes

We all know that when we use our credit card, we also get charged a transaction fee, but with mobile payments the charge per transaction is a lot let. So you're even saving money when paying with your mobile!

For more information on our new mobile payment feature, check out our Treats page on the website!

18 Jul2016 Coffee is your best gym buddy!

Coffee is your best gym buddy!

So why should we combine coffee to our gym workout? Caffeine is believed to have both physical and mental benefits for athletes before training. Check out our top benefits below!

Accelerates Fat Loss:

Having coffee before your workout helps burn fat faster! Fat cells can be used as an energy source instead of glycogen. Caffeine also increases your metabolism – making you burn more calories throughout the day!

Increase Performance:

Studies show that caffeine can reduce your perceived level of exertion by more than 5%, as well as improving exerciser performance by more than 11%.

Focus:

Black coffee increases our mental focus, which increases our productivity and effectiveness of our gym session.

Muscle Preservation:

Coffee triggers a mechanism in your brain that releases a growth factor which supports the neuromotor – the most critical element in your muscle. Therefore coffee helps maintains youthful muscle tissue. Scientists have found that drinking coffee before a high intensity workout reduces perceived muscle pain. This means caffeine helps you push yourself more while exercising and therefore improving muscle strength.

Improved micro-circulation:

Research discovered that no regular coffee drinkers experienced a 30% boost in capillary blood flow after drinking 5 ounces of regular coffee. Improved blood circulation improves oxygenation of your tissues which may boost your exercise performance.

So to gain that extra edge in your training, coffee might just be the perfect companion.

07 Jun2016 Yum-ita Granita - Introducing our Latest Summer Drink!

Yum-ita Granita - Introducing our Latest Summer Drink!

Introducing Insomnia's Strawberry Granita

Introducing the latest addition to our Ice Drinks Summer range, with the Strawberry Granita! With the summer in full swing, we wanted to give our customers another tasty treat to enjoy, and we’re sure the Granita will be a summer hit!

A Granita, if you're not too sure, is somewhere between sorbet and a snow-cone, it's the perfect refreshment for those hot summer days we wish we had more of in this country!

To be a bit more precise, a Granita is an Italian frozen dessert very similar to sorbet, except that a Granita's texture is coarser and flakier - like eating snow! It's briefly crunchy at the first gulp and then melts deliciously in your mouth.

Blanchardstown we have arrived!

Blanchardstown is the largest urban area in the county and now it has its very own Insomnia cafe!

Elizabeth our store manager was on site with her new "Blanch" team setting up the store to welcome new customers. Elizabeth says that she loves working for Insomnia and has been with us for 6 years. Originally from Romania, Elizabeth hopes to receive her Irish passport in the coming weeks.  She also admitted that shes slightly "addicted to our coffee". She told us she is very excited about her new store here in Blanchardstown and is looking forward to working with her current and new staff. Her coffee of choice is a flat white – once the barista finishes it off with a heart!

Jovita our supervisor is originally from Lithuania and has been part of the Insomnia family for 6 years also. Living in Clonsilla, shes a neighbour of Blanchardstown and knows the area well. Joviata thinks that now that Insomnia has opened in Blanchardstown it "is a big opportunity to bring the locals together and create a community vibe." If she had a power it would to be able to fly!

Our two Blanchardstown baristas are Sorin and Eliana - both with exceptional latte art skills. Sorin, originally from Romania, is now a "Blanchardtownie" as he lives in the area. He believes Insomnia is a unique coffee company serving the best coffee around. Like the other staff, he too is looking forward to meeting the locals both old and new. If Sorin was given a super power he would like to be able to read peoples minds!

Eliana is originally from New Zealand. She was a regular customer but wanted to spend more time with us, so she joined the Insomnia clann 2 years ago. Eliana loves the fact that Insomnia is an Irish company and provides so many jobs around the country. The ability to fly would be her ultimate super power.

It goes without saying that there is a wealth of experience among the new Blanchardstown team - make sure to test their latte art skills by asking for your favourite design to top off your favourite hot beverage!
